About Rick DeTroye, L.Ac.

My path to practicing acupuncture & Chinese medicine began with my own health issues. A knee injury, a shoulder injury, and chronic low back pain forced me to try many options for pain relief. After seeing numerous Western and complementary medical providers with limited success, I had just about given up hope of finding any way to resolve my pain. Then a friend recommended seeing someone who practiced Chinese massage and Chinese herbal medicine. After several treatments and the use of Chinese herbal formulas, I began to experience significant and lasting decreases in my pain. Adding in several acupuncture sessions with another practitioner provided me with further improvements. My knee was now fully functional, my shoulder pain was gone and my back was feeling better than it had in two years.

Inspired by my good fortune and wanting to share this amazing medicine with others, I decided to pursue a career in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. In 1995, I enrolled at Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM) in their three year Master's degree program in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. I graduated from OCOM in July 1998.

I'm currently licensed to practice acupuncture by the Oregon Medical Board and I hold a Diplomate in Acupuncture with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. In addition to running my private practice, I've worked as a staff acupuncturist for InAct, Inc., a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in Portland, and as a teaching assistant at OCOM.

Prior to beginning my study of Oriental Medicine, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, worked as a residential counselor at Intermountain Children's Home in Helena, Montana, and worked as a Program Associate at Legacy's Good Samaritan and Emmanuel Hospitals in Portland with their traumatic brain injury rehabilitation program.

In 2007, I co-founded Portland Veterans Acupuncture Project (PVAP), a non-profit organization that provides no-cost acupuncture to veterans with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I volunteered with PVAP as a board member, staff acupuncturist and volunteer coordinator until 2010.

These days, I continue my work with veterans as a volunteer with Returning Veterans Project, a non-profit group providing free mental health and alternative health care services to veterans of the post-9/11 era and their families.

In Spring 2016, I also began volunteering with Columbia Gorge Refuge Stewards, working as a trail steward at Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Washougal, WA.

Since graduating from OCOM, I've had the good fortune to study with a number of gifted practitioners and teachers including Kyle Cline, Dr. Joe Coletto, Matt Callison, Dr. Tran Viet Dzung, Malvin Finkelstein, Sharon Weizenbaum, Kiiko Matsumoto, and Monika Kobylecka. I'm grateful to each of them for sharing their time and knowledge.

I make an effort to support some of the organizations I share common values and concerns with. Professionally, I'm a member of the Oregon Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, as well as Acupuncturists Without Borders, and I'm a life member of the OCOM Alumni Association. My business also supports Utah Diné Bikéyah/Protect Bears Ears National Monument and Hawkwatch International. At home, my wife and I support Oregon Public Broadcasting, Northwest Pilot Project, Portland Audubon, and Columbia Gorge Refuge Stewards.

I have a deep love for Nature and great respect for its healing potential, and there's no place I would rather be than in the outdoors. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to visit some beautiful and very special places, and I try to carry the spirit of those places into my practice of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. I also spend as much time as possible hiking, birding, and exploring Nature's landscape.
