Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbs -

The practice of Chinese herbal medicine dates back thousands of years. As with many cultures, herbs were originally a part of traditional folk medicine in China. Eventually, the study of Chinese herbs became systematized and highly refined. The herbal approaches developed centuries ago continue to influence contemporary Chinese herbal practice.

Chinese herbs are most often administered in combinations called "formulas". These formulas can be used as a stand-alone therapy or taken in conjunction with other treatment methods such as acupuncture. The use of bulk herbs or powdered concentrates allows for formulas to be custom tailored to each patient's particular needs. Formulas in tablet and capsule forms may also be used when a less custom approach is needed.

In addition to formulas taken internally, the external application of herbal liniments, salves or washes is frequently used to support the healing process.

Producers of Chinese herbs distributing herbal products in the U.S. must comply with FDA guidelines known as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). These guidelines help ensure the safety of the herbs for consumers. All herbs used in my practice are distributed by companies meeting these requirements.
